Regular visits to your Chino Hills dentist are important because they help keep your teeth and your gums healthy. Dental checkup(s) should occur once every six months to ensure all is well with your teeth and gums.
Your dentist in Chino Hills will check to see if you have any cavities and look for plaque and tartar. Plaque is that sticky and clear layer of bacteria that if not removed, becomes tartar. Tartar cannot be removed simply by brushing or flossing and if it builds up on your teeth, it can lead to oral disease.
Next, the dentist will check your gums with a special tool that measures the spaces between your gums and your teeth. If you have healthy gums, this space will be shallow but people with gum disease will have deeper spaces.
The checkup may also include taking a good look at your tongue, face and even neck looking for swelling or signs of cancer.
Brushing and flossing keep your teeth relatively clean, but you cannot remove tartar with the instruments you have at home. During your teeth cleaning, a dental professional will use special tools to remove the tartar from your teeth. This is called scaling. After your teeth have been scaled, they may polish your teeth with a gritty paste. Lastly, the specialist will floss your teeth.
When the flossing is done, your dentist will come and talk with you, giving you any information that might be pertinent and answering any of your questions.
