An abscessed tooth is a serious situation that requires immediate attention. Sometimes, it can be life-threatening if you allow the condition to persist. However, you can temporarily remedy the infection with prompt attention and antibiotics. To address the infection’s source, you’ll usually need a procedure performed by your dentist, such as a root canal.
If you feel that you have an abscessed tooth or may develop one, getting treatment as soon as possible is essential. You may even need to make an emergency appointment if you have severe pain. Some symptoms of an accessed tooth include the following.
You’ll need to see your dentist to determine if you have an abscessed tooth. If the dentist determines that there is indeed an abscess, they will prescribe antibiotics and schedule a root canal in most instances. You’ll likely need to take the antibiotics for a few days before proceeding with treatment to address the issue permanently.
The root canal is designed to get to the cause of the issue and remove any infection and damaged tissues to ensure the site doesn’t become infected again. Usually, this requires the dentist to give you a local anesthetic to numb the area before drilling a hole in the tooth to access and remove the infected pulp. He will then clean and seal the canals to protect the tooth from infection. The procedure will be completed with a dental crown placed over the tooth.
