Dr. Shah: Hi Bryce, welcome to ask the doctor, please ask your question?
Bryce (Patient): Hi Doctor, what are the advantages of using a water flosser and how do I use it?
Dr. Shah: That’s a good question. It’s kind of new technology or new science, where before we were doing just the brushing and flossing of the teeth and at the most, using mouthwash. This pressurized water, which the brand name is Waterpik or any other company can use as a water flosser, it works very well, especially when somebody is aged in advance. If the ages go higher, three things will happen in the body. Number 1. Gums will recede, that will create a space between the teeth, which will collect the food Particles pack the food particles to attract the bacteria and cause cavities and gum disease. The second one is with the age advances; your saliva will flow less. So, your saliva production will be less just like any other part of aging, Your saliva will produce less. Also, as age advances, if somebody has a chronic disease, diabetes, or blood pressure, they’re taking medication for those conditions, and especially any kind of high blood pressure medication is notorious for dryness of the mouth. So, your saliva is a protective mechanism. Two things happen. The content of the saliva has an antibacterial effect, plus the mechanical flow of the saliva will wash out the food particles and some of the bacteria. So that also will be reduced. And Number 3, The muscle tone will go down with age advances, so the way you move your tongue and lips to remove the foot particles between the teeth and around the teeth will also be cut down. So, in this situation, Waterpik works very well, plus if you have an implant, plus if you have bridges, crowns fillings, anything like crowded teeth or even the blessing will be if somebody is getting braces, Somebody is getting a braces. So, when you have any of these conditions, Waterpik will help very well. You can ask your doctor how to use a Waterpik efficiently. The doctor of the dentist’s office, they have a water syringe on their unit. The water syringe works practically the same way as the water flosser. So, we can give a demonstration in your mouth, with the water flosser, I mean, With the water syringe, you will have a better understanding of how it works. So, Number 1, the advantages you asked me, the advantages of the Waterpik or water flosser is that it removes food particles, It removes some of the bacteria, It removes some of the plaque, but not all the plaque will be removed with a water flosser and one more is because the water will rub with your gums, It will do the gum massage. When the gum massages are done, gums will have better blood circulation. Gums will be healthier. Gums will get a little bit tougher also. If you do the Waterpik on gums every single day, at certain point, they get more tougher and they will not easily bleed. So these are the advantages of a Water flosser, thank you.
